Altoona, IA – Young Driver Killed, Others Hurt in Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-80

Altoona, IA (August 18, 2025) – A wrong-way crash on Interstate 80 near Altoona left one young motorist dead and several others injured early Friday morning, August 15.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, the crash happened around 1:35 a.m. when 19-year-old Zachary Scothorn of Altoona was driving westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-80. Scothorn’s Toyota Tundra collided with two vehicles travelling east.

Troopers reported that one vehicle, struck by Scothorn, became disabled in the roadway and was then hit by a third car seconds later. Scothorn, who was not wearing a seatbelt, tragically died at the scene.

A passenger in Scothorn’s vehicle, along with the drivers of the other two cars, suffered injuries and were transported by Altoona EMS to a nearby hospital. Their conditions remain unknown at this time.

Authorities closed portions of I-80 while crews responded to the crash and investigated. The Iowa State Patrol continues to examine the circumstances of the incident.
