Altoona, IA – One Killed in Collision, Three Hurt on I-80

Altoona, IA (August 30, 2025) – A fatal three-vehicle crash on Interstate 80 near Altoona early Friday morning, August 29, left one person dead and three others injured. The collision occurred around 1:30 a.m. in the eastbound lanes and prompted an extensive response from local and state emergency agencies.

The Iowa State Patrol reported that 19-year-old Zachary Scothorn of Altoona was reportedly driving a Toyota Tacoma the wrong way in the eastbound lanes when it collided head-on with a Dodge 3500 pickup. The impact disabled the Dodge in the roadway, and shortly afterward, a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van struck the stationary vehicle, worsening the crash.

Scothorn was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Dodge, a passenger in the same vehicle, and the driver of the Sprinter van were transported by Altoona EMS to Mercy Hospital. Their current conditions have not been released.

Due to the severity of the collision, I-80 was closed for over two hours to allow a medical helicopter to land and to facilitate the investigation. Delaware Township Fire Department, Polk County Sheriff’s deputies, Unity Point LifeFlight, and Highway Helpers assisted at the scene.

The Iowa State Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Our condolences go out to the family of Zachary Scothorn, and we extend our thoughts to the injured as they begin the road to recovery.
